Motivation

Importance of ASL

American Sign Language (ASL) is the primary language of over 1 million people in North America.  With nearly 150,000 students enrolled in ASL classes in the US, it is the 3rd most-studied language (after Spanish and French)

ASL Learning Gap

Spoken language learning websites allow users to speak into a microphone and have their pronunciation evaluated.  Before Give Me a Sign, there was no analogous capability for evaluating the quality of signed words.  Learning ASL required paying a trained instructor to provide feedback on signs.

Our Mission - Bridge the Gap

The mission of the Give Me a Sign team is to bridge the ASL learning gap by providing a system for analyzing videos of user signs and reporting if the sign was produced correctly.  Our system enables people to learn ASL without having to hire an instructor.  It is our sincere hope that more people will learn ASL using our system, allowing more people to connect, whether Deaf or Hearing.
